The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is seeking a French/English Translator for the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA). This permanent position is based in Dakar, Senegal, within the Directorate of Administration and Finance’s Language Services Division.
Role Overview
The Translator will report to the Head of Language Services and will be responsible for translating documents from French to English, including correspondences, Mutual Evaluation Reports (MERs), and Follow-Up Reports (FURs), often under tight deadlines. The role requires frequent use of terminologies related to law, crime prevention, rule of law, and issues concerning money laundering and financing of terrorism.
Key Responsibilities
- Promote consistent terminology usage in GIABA documents.
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee translation unit activities as needed.
- Ensure timely revision of documents translated from French to English.
- Identify changes and variations in terminology related to anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing.
- Conduct linguistic research and document multilingual terminology.
- Maintain and update databases and linguistic materials.
- Utilize computer-assisted translation tools effectively.
- Undertake specific missions as requested by the Head of Language Services.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Academic Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Translation from a recognized university.
- At least 5 years of experience in translation and technical writing.
- Proficiency in computer-assisted translation tools, machine translation tools, and on-screen editing tools.
- Strong knowledge of language structure, including grammar, composition, and history.
- Excellent drafting skills in English.
Age Requirement
- Applicants must be between 24 and 50 years old. This age limit does not apply to internal candidates.
Language Proficiency
- Fluency in English is required, with a very good command of French.

This position offers an annual salary of UA 43,414.62 ($68,499.59) for P3 grade and UA 50,354.45 ($79,449.26) for P4 grade.
