About the African Union (AU):

Purpose of the Internship Program:
The African Union Internship Program offers a unique opportunity for young professionals and students to gain hands-on experience within a Pan-African organization. This full-time program is designed to complement participants’ academic training, develop their professional skills, and expose them to the workings of the AU. Interns will contribute to the implementation of AU programs and projects while learning in a multicultural and dynamic environment. The program also serves as a grooming ground for future African leaders, fostering a new generation of skilled and passionate individuals committed to the continent’s development.

Focus Areas:
Interns will provide administrative and technical support across various AU departments and directorates, including but not limited to:

  • Cabinet of the Chairperson
  • Cabinet of the Deputy Chairperson
  • Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment (ARBE)
  • Economic Development, Trade, Industry, and Mining (ETIM)
  • Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation (ESTI)
  • Infrastructure and Energy (IE)
  • Political Affairs, Peace, and Security (PAPS)
  • Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development (HHS)
  • Women, Gender, and Youth (WGY)
  • Partnership and Resource Mobilization
  • Peace Fund Secretariat
  • New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Actively enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree program OR
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree or a postgraduate (Master’s) qualification in a related field.
  • Be a national of an African Union member state.
  • Be fluent in at least one of the AU working languages: Arabic, English, French, or Portuguese.
  • Be no more than 32 years of age at the time of selection.
  • Demonstrate the highest standard of moral conduct and integrity.
  • Have no criminal record (excluding minor traffic offenses).
  • Prior work experience is not required.

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Fluency in one AU working language and proficiency in another is an added advantage.

Terms and Conditions:

  • The AU will not provide financial compensation for internships.
  • Interns are responsible for their travel, accommodation, and living expenses.
  • The AU will assist interns in obtaining necessary visas.
  • The internship duration is three (3) months, renewable once.
  • Interns must have individual insurance coverage for the duration of the program.
